With
one of Montana's worst fire seasons in history behind us, I am reminded
of the Colorado fire a few years back on Storm King Mountain that took
the lives of a number of firefighters. When the wind shifted, the men
and women who were down in a gully started to run up the hillside when
their training kicked in which told them not to outrun a fire, and so
each one laid down and wrapped themselves in an aluminum fireproof bag
to allow the fire to burn over them. Each one, except three out of the
eleven.
In an interview on TV, the three told their individual stories. When
the winds shifted, each one had an impulse to run to the top of the
ridge, but their training had taught them to not attempt outrunning
the fire. Seeing the ridge was NOT that far away, they each individually
hesitated, when a small still voice spoke into their minds and said
to run to the top of the ridge. Without further question, the two men
and one woman ran for it and survived.
Scripture tells us that the Spirit and the flesh are at emnity with
each other. In other words, simply put, what the Lord would speak into
our minds and hearts will oftentimes be contrary to what the world and
our flesh would speak to us. In the refining fire we are each fighting
in our individual lives every day, it is crucial that we learn to first
QUIET our lives - in order to hear this still small voice inside each
one of us, otherwise, the 'voices' of the world around us will be the
ones we respond to.
It has been said 'if the devil can't get you to sin, he'll get you too
busy...'. Scripture says, (and it's still true today), "MY sheep hear
My voice and they know Me and they follow Me..." Our society frowns
upon those who say they 'hear voices', and yet the Bible has record
of it - and it's not wrong....."many voices have gone out into the world;
all of them without significance.." I Cor.13:10.
In order to continue our walk through this firey furnace called life
and come out NOT even smelling of smoke, we must hear the voice of God
and then obey it. His voice oftentimes runs contrary to the natural
or carnal voice of our inner man, and so it's imperative that we learn
to discern His voice NOW, for the cares and concerns and ideas of the
world are only going to get louder in our lives and our walking according
to His plan and His leading is ever so important, so that unlike the
firefighters who perished on Storm King Mountain, we will survive.
He is the Mighty Counselor and the Prince of Peace. May we each follow
His leading through the Green Pastures and beside the Still Waters.
